When you connect to the line input on the Beolabs, they are basically blasting

One channel only. The two drivers are run in the same phase - which actually becomes opposing phase as they are positioned facing each other - so it cancels out most mechanical vibration.

At least they got some sense in the connector mess! (Note that the RCA/phono/cinch connector that prevails nowadays is far from perfect - it is coaxial which is nice, but the fact that it usually connects signal before ground, certainly isn't.)

It was a mildly successful attempt by the German standards authority to lay minimum requirements on what could be called "high fidelity". Looking at the user manual, seems they do; lesser models only have a speaker function. I'm not sure how (or how well) it is implemented - it is easier when the speaker is in the handset as well, so the distance between the speaker and mic stays fixed. Maybe the mic is just very directional in these, as the manual instructs to place the handset on

Siemens has some great PSTN+VoIP (SIP) phones that work extremely reliably, so the technology is
