Every electronic product is prone to failure in one way or another. A manufacturing defect on even the smallest part, such as a capacitor (of which there are hundreds, even thousands inside your speakers) can cause the product to fail completely.

Have a listen to them. I've found that the BeoLab 3s tend to go deeper than the 8000s, and produce more bass, and are also generally faster and more detailed - better for electronic/rock music! However if classical music or jazz is your thing, you'll probably prefer the 8000s, they're 'smoother', but IMO an 'older' sound, don't touch the 3s when it

Sounds to me like it's crying out to have a BeoMedia/similar mounted in the bottom! Or alternatively you could fit it with a MacMini and BeoPort, and wire up 'front-row' based media centre. Leopard's FrontRow doesn't work with BeoPort at the moment I believe...

800 x 640 would be the best. Anything higher and you won't see a thing! Anything lower and there will be no display space! Are you using the Mac as a media centre?
