You don't need to check for updates frequently, your Mac will tell you when there are updates available.

It basically lets you put a simple speaker system or 'stand-alone Television' in say, your kitchen or bedroom, which accesses your 'home cinema' or whatever in the main room. That's pretty generic though, you don't need a home cinema, just a simple stereo system will do.

Not sure how much you're looking to spend, but a BeoSystem 3 sounds like your best option!

Actually I find the screen on my iPod Nano great for videos! Really good for watching Family Guy or The Mighty Boosh on the bus/car/whatever. It's obviously not going to be on par with watching it on a proper TV, but it's much, much better than you would expect...

The copy-speed is the one that really gets me. I regularly change the music on my iPod Nano in the mornings, when I'm really pushed for time. Copying an album onto my iPod Nano at 256 kbps will usually take much less than a minute. Heck I can have a 1 hour 256 k album across in 30 seconds...

You may not be able to hear reflections in the room, but if there weren't any, you definitely would hear the difference! A £500 sound system in a room with good acoustics, and little reflections will sound better than a £5000 system in a room with poor acoustics and lots of reflections...
