Never having shopped for a subwoofer my initial thoughts are that a servo based system would make sense, whereby the position of the cone is controlled rather than driven open loop. Does anyone know how many top flight subs are servo based and the pros/cons of said implementation?

The smps "power supply capacitor" type failure has already been covered earlier in the thread (everything was working before the mains supply was interupted but fails to turn on when re-applied).
