Just found this . From what it seems, the AD1852 seems to be quite difficult to implement correctly, but when it's done correctly it's a very high performance chip. Don't you do stuff like this Punch?
More a power man myself - I think the difference is if you're working on a "real" product
-
Exactly - it is a good quality, inexpensive part, available to all. Since B&O no longer publish circuit schematics we will never know if their particular inplementation varies in any significant way from the manufacturers published reference designs.
The audio chips in the motherboard aren't used, B&O uses their own...
The converter is an Analog Devices AD1852
.............. The hardware is much more impressive, especially considering the BeoMedia as the precursor. The processor must be powerful as no average PC I've ever seen has operated as smoothly with such intensive display and processing tasks. It's more on par with a gaming PC. The bespoke DAC is also a

I'm not sure why I want it (or if I want it). When I listen to my favourite album do I want all songs to sound the same - of course not! When I'm listening in the house all by myself do I want to listen to songs that are in a similar vain - I hope not. Do I want to dance all day (maybe sometimes) do I want to feel sad all day (probably not)
I see your point, but I've never actually found the BeoSound 5 to show any signs of 'slowness'. In fact I've found it to be absolutely seamless. I was initially referring more to the idea of MOTS running on an ordinary desktop PC, which I don't think is going to become a reality any time soon! [/quote
Yes, but it's not the actual processor speed itself which counts - it's how well matched the software is to the hardware. Similar to the way in which games which are designed to run on all different computer hardware configs are generally much slower than those which only run on a few hardware configurations. Also

They definitely do some sort of audio analysis, certainly more than tag sorting but I agree, ordinary hardware.

I wonder if you can buy used instrumentation mics such as Bruel & Kjaer from ebay. I sometimes borrow one from work - (it is perfectly flat up to 16KHz).

and the CD5500, CD6500???
