There are 3 ways to get N.MUSIC: Beoport (Beolink PC2), Beomedia 1 and now Beomedia 5. If a system is compatible with N.MUSIC it will be compatible with ant of this N.MUSIC server.

Even if you are not fond of N.MUSIC, I would still get a compatible one... just in case. The upgrade might be costly as well. I think you need to change a chip. As I said, on the Beosound 3000 you will be able to use the A-AUX In socket as it is not taken bu the converter. I cannot comment on the quality. I do not know.
