Otherwise, I wouldn't think twice about what batteries to put in my remotes. I usually buy ten-packs of AAA and AA batteries when my wife drags me along to Ikea. Cheap, not as good as "branded" but hey, If I change batteries every 9 months instead of every 15 months is no big deal to me.

Seems like some part of you setup gives a signal to the Onkyo, and the Onkyo loops it trough even though it's shut off. I would try and isolate what part it is, power up/down with only one source connected to the Onkyo. Maybe it's the Onkyo itself.
