@ TripEnglish, don't you feel that this could simply be because the BeoLab 4s are higher up than the BeoLab 9s? BeoLab 3s should do even better as they respond better off axis (which is usually more important for rear speakers than it is for fronts, as you sit at a greater angle in relation to the rear speakers themselves).

I don't feel there is any necessity for bass reinforcement with the BeoLab 3s - they can produce quite a lot of bass by themselves. If you do feel the bass is slightly lacking, you'll get much better 'sound per pound' to move up to BeoLab 9s than get a BeoLab 2, although the latter will still give a very good sound...
