As a "white van man" I am at a loss to understand how they have managed to completly cover the sound of the diesel engine. I know this can be in cars as they have a lot more places to pack the sound proofing.

Have you any way to prove you have dial tone going into the bc6000 base ? I see no reason the bc4 would not work as a hard wired extension from the base station socket.

Unplug the phones and try them individually in an other location (neighbours ?). I would suspect the phones are ok and you might need to look at what else you have connected in the house ie; dsl, alarms, sky tv other type phones. Its amazing what gets plugged into phone circuits these days.

Soren did post me this information a month ago but I just could not get it to work then or now. I am glad I did not get a beovision as almost every time I get there my sky dish has been moved by the wind despite my best efforts at securing it.
