... how does the BL5 handle the volume control, does it do it in digital domain before reaches the DAC> crossover > amplifier or in the analog stage?
The signal path is : analogue IN (PL or LINE) > A/D converter > switch SPDIF IN / converted analogue IN > Digital Sound Processing > D/A converters

Since the US Version is quite different to the EU / AUS version, the best way is to read the US user manual. http://www.bang-olufsen.com/UserFiles/File/ug/BeoSystem_1_US/BeoSystem_1_US_English.pdf On page 39 the format adjustments are described - please notice: you can also move the picture "up" and "down" ...
it seems that the Beomedia 1 can not be a master audio
The BeoMedia 1 was, as far as I remember, always intended for being connected to a TV (=video-master).
... what is it good for? hmpf ...
To connect an IR receiver "eye" optionally - being able to control the sources via a remote while not sitting directly in front of the idling computer ... And yes, the computer, regardless of "flavour", must be on ...
...By the way: can a beomaster 5 alone, without bs5, integrate with a Kuro pioneer?
If the Kuro can be used as a monitor (VGA/DVI) it should be possible. You'll need an external B&O IR-receiver - no sync-cable - and we're back to powerlink + SPDIF . Download the BeoMaster 5 Setup/User-Guide from B&O
Until settling things down, I'm receiving the speakers only next week, I will connect my iMac, from the other room, directly to the BL5. I just bought the needed converter optical >coax. And play music using the iPhone.
For a non-B&O setup you'll have to order a "Sync Cable BeoLab 5 (10m)"

Standalone audio - YES (BeoSound 9000 <ML-CABLE> Wireless as transmitter ) Linkroom (OPT 4/5/6) - YES (BeoSound 9000 <ML-CABLE> Wireless as receiver) BUT in an A/V setup ALL MASTERS must be connected permanently via ML-cable . VIDEO <ML-CABLE> AUDIO <ML-CABLE> DIGITAL MUSIC <ML-CABLE> WIRELESS (transmitter)
-
Audiomaster and videomaster (units in Opt 0/1/2) have to be connected via a ML cable - not via wireless!
... and it should be operable by owners who might not even know where their BM5 is located...
SPOT ON - exactly those suffering from COMPUTERPHOBIA will be the TARGET GROUP ...
I had heard just the opposite: That the CD-ripper is intended for connection between the BeoSound 5 and the BeoMaster 5 for direct ripping to the BeoMaster.
I was told that the soon coming ripping station - CAN BE ADDED TO ANY existing BeoSound/BeoMaster 5 combo. - CAN DEFINITIVELY NOT be used for BeoSound 5
