Not necessary. In the menu of your tv you can disable the navigation button, so you can use it with your remote.

Are you using the "old" Beo4? Navigation button is probarly "on". Navigation button is used for the new Beo4.

A friend of mine had the same problem, with only a hdmi cable on his Sony. Mp3 on a usb-stick, same issue. BR- or DVD-disk, no problems. Problem was solved with a spdif-cable or L/R cable running next to his hdmi. I forgot which cable... Good luck!
