The main IR commands are the same for most of the Sony's, so this will not be a problem. Your BS3-box (at the back of your BV9) can not decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD master audio. Having a bluray player that can decode these formats makes a world of a difference (especially in a setup with BeoLab 5) - the sound will then be passed on as uncompressed

You can update your BV9 PUC (actually the BeoSystem 3) to handle all listed players (Samsung, Sony BDP etc). Please note that the BV9 mkI is only 720p, so you will not be able to explore the full potential of your 1080p bluray disc.
