I think I'm going to apply to the Eugene School of "But It Completes The Set" Beo Purchase Justification.  

Yesterday I bought a Beocord 1900 from Ebay.  With apologies to Menahem, I guess it'll go out in the garage with the BM1900 and BV M70 Set 2.  And I have a spare BG3404 sitting in a box, and a spare MMC3000, so I guess that's gotta get hooked up to the BM1900, too.

Before the BC1900 arrives, and I get out the spare BG3404, I think the garage needs some work. 

There was a perfect storm today to kickoff Operation Make the Garage Worthy of a Beosystem:

• Michigan Wolverine football game doesn't start until 7:00 pm
• It's pouring rain here in Florida
• Detroit Tiger baseball game doesn't start until 8:00 pm
• I had some pine boards left over from building bunk beds for my daughters
• Most importantly....motivation....a rarity for me

First thing I did was check the measurements of my BM1900, BC2400, and BG3404.  I decided to go ahead and make a stand that would allow all three units to sit side-by-side.  Shouldn't every house have at least one vintage Beosystem with all the components lined up in a row?  I blame Jeff for getting me thinking along those lines - when I visited JaffBay, he showed me his plans for his 6000 series.  Or was it 8000? 

Anyway, based on materials I had on hand, I decided to go with a shelf about 61.5" x 15".  I cut two 1x4's and one 1x8 at 60", then cut two 14.25" lengths from the scrap 1x4's and 1x8.  I glued the smaller pieces across the longer pieces thusly:

After letting the glue set for a few hours, I put the dumbbells away and flipped the shelf over.  I cut two more 14.25" lengths of 1x4, plus a 61.5" length of 1x4.  These three pieces were screwed into the shelf and became a skirt.  I sanded the top and sides and gave the result a coat of pine stain.

Well, it's day two, and still no BC1900! 

Still raining here in Florida, the Detroit Tigers don't play until 8:00 pm, and the Detroit Lions are on Monday night!  Guess I need to do some more work on Operation Make the Garage Worthy of a Beosystem!

The trim around the window in the garage is at about 4 feet, so I wanted the system to be under that.  With legs cut at 39", the stand will be 40.5" tall.  I had two 2x4's left from the bunk bed project, so they became the legs.  After sanding them a bit (first time in my life I ever sanded a 2x4), I attached them with some corner braces I also had left over from the bunk bed project.

Once all four legs were attached, I gave them a first coat of stain.  I also gave the underside of the tabletop a second coating of stain.

While the stain was drying, I cleaned up a bit the area the Beosystem will go, including banishing the Klipsch kg2's from the area.  After an hour or so, I flipped the table over and gave the top and the legs a second coat of stain.

Day 3 of Dude, Where's My BC1900.  Heard from the seller that it's shipped, due a week from today.

Also bought a Beomic 2000 today.  [:'(]  Another item category off the list. 

Operation Make the Garage Worthy of a Beosystem had some progress today.  While watching the Detroit Tigers on my tiny TV out in the garage, I got a coat of sealing wax on the table.  After a quick dinner, I went back out in the garage to clean a bit more, and finally moved the table into its final position.  Also dug the BG3404 out of a stack of boxes.  I'll need to reattach the dust cover before hooking it up.  That will be my goal for the rest of the week.

Thanks to everyone who has popped in to say hi and offer words of encouragement on this and other threads.  The BM1900 is hooked back up to the M70s and seems to like her new home.

As post cost for Steel items to the US is imposible with Mexpost, I will do one more Mex city-McAllen-Mex-city, I love driving, the pull of a good 6 cyl engine makes me sing, and maybe I will be listening to my new Acoustic Competence on the Cd player, can it get better.

I don't think one can truly appreciate how long a 12' tabletop is until one builds a 5' 1.5" tabletop and thinks that's wide!

Welcome to Day 4 of "Dude, Where's My BC1900?"  Not to be confused with Day 2 of "Dude, Where's My Beomic 2000."  Except that these days are both one and the same, today!  Perhaps I am just trying to write a poor imitation of a really bad Monty Python skit.

Anyway, I got the BG3404 with MMC3000 hooked up, but did not attempt to reattach the dust cover as yet.  Maybe tomorrow.

Here's my always-to-be-done "Whole Lotta Love" test.  It was a very high pass!

You didn't miss anything yesterday, Day 5 of "Dude, Where's My BC1900?"  One metric butt-load of box moving in the garage, then the Detroit Tigers losing in extra innings to the Texas Rangers. 

On the other hand, Day 6 is off to a good start.  What's that on the table in my office at work?

I didn't realize until I opened the box that I had been looking at the cover of the owner's manual.

Well, that's a shame.  Looks like someone "Americanized" the microphone.  No way for me to test this until I change the male plug to match my BC2400 female plug.  Can anyone tell me how to wire it?

As Week 1 of "Dude, Where's My BC1900?" came to a close last night, we had mixed results.

The good:  the Detroit Tigers won game 5 of the ALCS, staving off elimination.  Oh, and I got the dust cover back on my second BG3404.  I still need to balance the tonearm.

The bad:  Floyd the Cat and I had a failed test of the Beomic 2000. 

The BC2400 manual includes a circuit diagram.  Based on my interpretation of the circuit diagram, it looked like the microphone input summed pins 1 and 4 as the input signal, and had pins 2, 3 and 5 all going to ground.

I removed the 1/4" plug from the mic last night and soldered the black lead and the shielding to pin 5 of a DIN male plug.  I then soldered the red lead to pin 1.  I tried recording my voice on my BC2400 but I had no signal.  Failure possibilities:

1. Wired the DIN male plug wrong
2. Mic doesn't work
3. BC2400 mic input doesn't work

Since I can't know if #2 or #3 is the case, I was hoping #1 was the case.  I used my Google Fu this morning and found a longish wiring pdf that included a page on "5-pin DIN Audio."  It says left signal input is pin 1, right signal input is pin 4, and ground is pin 2.  I'll try changing the black lead and shielding to pin 2 and see if that works.

Sounds better. On a DIN plug pin 2 ("middle" pin) is always GND. Normally 1&4 is in (1 left, 4 right).

That's what you found as well.

You can touch pin4 or pin1 on your BC with your finger without touching GND as well - your BC2400 recording should hum massively. Then BC input is ok.

Have a BM1000 SM that could probably give some hints but that's useless as it shows part numbers only.

We are now into Week 2 of "Dude, Where's My BC1900?", and still no BC1900.  I should have it Monday, though.  The rewiring of the mic was not a success last night - I will try again when the new male plug I ordered comes in.

In the meantime, I did another metric butt-load of box moving and got the BG3404 (now with dust cover) hooked up in the garage.  Also have an old switch hooked up to the tape input so that I can take the iPod out to the garage.

Just need that BC1900 now.  Dude, where is it?
